Huntington's disease is caused by a genetic defect on chromosome number 4. The defect causes a part of DNA, called the CAG repeat, to occur many more times what is supposed to be. As the gene is passed from one generation to the next, the number of repetitions, called expansion of CAG repeats, it tends to be larger. Therefore, as the disease is transmitted from parent to child, it becomes evident at increasingly early ages. There are two forms of Huntington's disease and the most common is the onset in adulthood. People with this form of the disease usually have symptoms in the middle of the third and fourth decade of their lives. A form of Huntington's disease early onset represents a small number of cases began in childhood or adolescence. The symptoms may seem to those of Parkinson's disease with rigidity, slow movements and tremor. If one parent has Huntington's disease, you have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene for that disease. If you inherit the gene from their parents, will develop the disease at some point in their lives and they can transmit it to their children.
